Map of castles in Lithuania

Lithuania has a distinctive castle heritage closely connected to the formation and defense of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. During the Middle Ages, castles played a crucial role in protecting territory from external threats, especially during conflicts with the Teutonic Order and neighboring states. Many Lithuanian castles were built as strongholds guarding rivers, trade routes, and political centers. Although some fortifications have survived only as ruins, 17 castles are preserved today, forming an important part of the country’s historical and cultural landscape.

This map focuses on castles with confirmed defensive functions and historical significance. The selected sites include stone castles, brick fortresses, and fortified complexes that served military, administrative, or strategic purposes. Natural surroundings such as rivers, lakes, and elevated terrain were often incorporated into defensive systems, enhancing their effectiveness. The aim of the map is to present castles that actively contributed to Lithuania’s defense and state-building, rather than later residences or purely representative structures.

The map highlights 17 preserved castles across Lithuania. Each location is marked with a square symbol with a white center, making it easy to track visited sites, for example on a printed version of the map. The map can be downloaded in high resolution and printed for personal use or travel planning. Below, you will find a complete list of all Lithuanian castles included on the map.
